The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a youth-oriented initiative launched in 1969 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. At Sankar Polytechnic College (SPC), NSS has been a driving force in promoting social responsibility, discipline and holistic personal growth among students. The college operates two NSS units — Unit I, established in 1986, and Unit II, started in 2006 — both are actively involved in nurturing discipline, patriotism, disaster management awareness, and community service.
NSS plays a vital role in instilling discipline among students. Regular activities such as career guidance programs, soft skill training, entrepreneurship development, and environmental awareness campaigns encourage students to become punctual, organized, and socially responsible. These experiences shape them to face real-world challenges with confidence and integrity.
The spirit of patriotism is deeply rooted in the NSS activities. Volunteers enthusiastically participate in national celebrations, social awareness rallies, and public service programs that foster love for the nation, unity, and respect for cultural diversity. By engaging in these activities, students learn the value of selfless service and the importance of contributing to the nation’s development.
In the area of disaster management and asset creation, NSS volunteers from both units play a constructive role in developing community infrastructure in adopted villages. Rather than focusing solely on relief work, students contribute through practical projects such as whitewashing public buildings, repairing village roads, restoring school facilities, and doing electrical rewiring where needed. These hands-on initiatives not only enhance the living standards of rural communities but also strengthen volunteers’ leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
In essence, the two NSS units of Sankar Polytechnic College — Unit I (1986) and Unit II (2006) — following the motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” continue to mold students into disciplined, patriotic, and service-oriented citizens. Through their sustained efforts in education, environment, health, and social welfare, the NSS at SPC stands as a beacon of youth empowerment and community transformation, embodying the core principle of “EDUCATION THROUGH SERVICE” with the objective of fostering character and personality development among students through active community service.
