The design, building, and maintenance of infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings, are the purview of the professional engineering discipline known as civil engineering. It is the oldest engineering speciality and is referred to as the "father of engineering."

Since the establishment of Sankar Polytechnic College in 1958, the department of civil engineering has developed into a fully functional department covering all of the major fields of civil engineering.
