Industrial Visit to Kudankulam Nuclear Power Corporation
The Department of Computer Engineering, Sankar Polytechnic College, organized an industrial visit to Kudankulam Nuclear Power Corporation, Kudankulam on 19th December, 2025, for Third-year computer engineering students. Thirty one students accompanied by four faculty members participated in this educational excursion designed to provide practical exposure to power generation and advanced data science technology.
The program began with a comprehensive one-hour interactive session where KNPP officials presented the history and evolution of KNPP, mission planning strategies, and the role of KNPP in India's electricity generation. The session included current projects, future plans, and concluded with an engaging question-answer segment allowing students to interact directly with KNPP experts.
Following this, the group toured the Exhibition featuring sample models The KNPP Exhibition showcased well-structured sample models representing reactor systems, turbines, cooling mechanisms, control rooms, and safety features. The exhibits were designed to simplify complex nuclear engineering concepts. The KNPP experts are effectively demonstrating nuclear fission process, reactor operation and safety mechanisms, radiation shielding and emergency systems. The exhibits made the learning experience meaningful and memorable for students.
After that students were introduced to the general layout and operational features of Unit–1 and Unit–2. Officials explained the basic principles of nuclear fission, reactor operation, power generation process, and the importance of multiple safety barriers adopted at the plant.
The field visit to KNPP Unit–1 and Unit–2 was highly informative and educational. Observing critical facilities such as the pump house, fuel building, and fish filter area, distilled water removal building, diesel generators, and switch yard provided students with a comprehensive understanding of nuclear power plant operations. The visit significantly enhanced students’ technical knowledge and practical exposure.
After the visit, a lunch was provided by KNPP. The food was delicious and added to the overall enjoyable experience of the visit.
The final component of the visit was the simulator control room. In this section, we learned how the reactor is controlled and how various operational parameters and data are continuously monitored and maintained. After that, we observed the entire plant sample model, which was clearly and effectively explained by the official.
During the visit to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, it was observed that the plant operates with a very high level of safety and well-defined operational procedures. Advanced reactor control and monitoring systems are used to ensure safe and efficient power generation. The pump house and cooling systems play a crucial role in maintaining optimal plant performance, while the fuel building follows strict radiation protection and safety measures. The fish filter system at the seawater intake effectively prevents marine organisms from entering the cooling circuit, demonstrating the plant’s commitment to environmental protection. The distilled water removal and treatment systems ensure the required water purity for plant operations. Diesel generators serve as reliable emergency power sources, ensuring reactor safety during power outages. The switch yard efficiently manages power transmission and grid connectivity. The simulator control room provides valuable insight into reactor control and data monitoring, and the complete plant sample model helped in clearly visualizing the overall layout and functioning of the nuclear power plant.
Based on this experience, students are recommended to pursue practical exposure to nuclear power generation and helped students understand complex concepts beyond classroom learning. Interacting with plant officials and observing real-time systems such as the control room simulator, safety mechanisms, and auxiliary facilities increased students’ interest and confidence in the subject. The well-organized visit, clear explanations, and hands-on visual learning through models made the experience engaging and informative. Overall, the visit inspired students and enhanced their awareness of advanced technologies and safety practices followed in the nuclear power industry.
In conclusion, the field visit to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant was highly informative and educational. It provided students with a comprehensive understanding of nuclear power plant operations, safety systems, and environmental protection measures. Overall, the visit was a valuable learning experience that enhanced technical knowledge, inspired interest in the power sector, and contributed significantly to the students’ academic and professional development.
